The Olympic flame has begun its journey around the world. However it appears to have hit a considerable road block, when the flame made its way through the streets of Paris it was put out by free Tibet protestors. Basically a group of people protesting for a peaceful cause (half of whom were not Tibetan) attacked IOC volunteers (most of who were not Chinese) in other words innocents. The fact that China is hosting the Olympics is causing a considerable friction between the leaders of the world, first Beijing’s air quality came into question and now people worldwide are beginning to protest about China’s crackdown on Tibet a few weeks prior. The plea of the Tibetan people is an understandable one; many have been exiled to India and Nepal and the Chinese authorities have begun to tighten their grip on the area. However the goals of these people would be better achieved peacefully. The Chinese have been waiting for their turn to host the Olympics for many years, and it is clear that they hold this event in very high regard, the fact that they held a wild “one year left” ceremony is a testament to this. In Tibet many began to protest and burn shops and these protests were violently put down, people on both sides including the Dalai Lama have been asking people to stop the aggression.  This is why it sounds a bit odd when a group who not only have been asked to be peaceful but are protesting for a peaceful cause, attacks innocents in the name of their cause. Violence will not solve this issue it will only increase Chinese determination and will. On a lighter note the Torch arrived in Tanzania recently and was met with no hostilities or protests, it appears that places in the world that actually have problems to worry about don’t really care about the plight of Tibet.
